December 19, 2014: A veil of secrecy surrounds
theft and corruption charges against of eight police officers, the first
to be charged by Adelaide’s anti-corruption watchdog.
Eight South Australian police officers charged with theft after an
investigation by the state's corruption watchdog have faced court for
the first time today.
9NEWS can now reveal Iain Mott, 53, Jed Raymond Coffey, 33, Michelle Kay Hack, 27, have been charged after the first major investigation by the state’s new Independent Commission Against Corruption.
But the identities of five other charged officers remains a secret, after their lawyers successfully applied to have their names supressed.
The secrecy surrounding the case is so tight the magistrate even made the rare move to clear the committal court today.
Even the reasons for the suppression order are suppressed because the state government announced hearings of its new corruption watchdog would be held in secret.
The eight police were members of a Southern Suburbs Drug Squad at the time of their arrest.
The case’s suppression order will be reviewed next month before the officers face court in February.
