Their perpetually faltering relationship has been at the heart of hit comedy Miranda since it first hit screens in 2009.
So it’s no surprise that millions tuned in to see Miranda Hart finally walk down the aisle with Gary, played by Tom Ellis, putting aside the years of disasters, blunders and misunderstanding that have kept them apart.
And it was an outcome that had the BBC sitcom’s fans expressing their joy on social media, with one posting: ‘Now that Miranda has finished I feel so lucky and privileged to have met her’.

They do: Miranda finally gets to marry her long-term sweetheart Gary in the final episode of Miranda, shown on the BBC on Thursday evening
It's done: After five years, the couple finally lock lips as they make a lifetime's commitment to one another
Even before the show was broadcast, fans were making it clear this was the outcome they wanted, with hundreds of messages urging Miranda and Gary to work out their issues that saw their wedding called off at the end of the Christmas Day episode.
One wrote: ‘Please be the day that all my dreams come true and Miranda marries Gary’, while another added: ‘if Gary and Miranda don’t sort their s*** out and get married, I’m not watching the BBC again’.
However, fans were left guessing until the last minute, with Miranda only racing to declare her love to Gary and finally walk down the aisle at the end of the episode, having spent the whole show previously saying she wanted to make a clean break.
What to do: Earlier on in the day, Miranda contemplated whether or not she should go through with the nuptials - after they were called off during the Christmas Day special
She came to her senses: She soon tracked down her lover as she agreed to become his wife
It's happening: Placing her hands on his chest, Miranda delighted her Twitter fans as she said her vows
Although Miranda’s decision to start putting herself first rather than ‘faffing around with a stupid boy’ received praise from some Twitter users, many could not comprehend the idea she would not end up with Gary.
One wrote: ‘Miranda and Gary are still not together and my heart hurts’ and another added: ‘15 mins for Miranda to get back with Gary’.
Even before the last episode aired, many fans were already missing their favourite show. One wrote on Twitter:
Something to say: Wearing a white jacket over a blue dress, the character addressed the camera during the emotional final episode
Pucker up: It was smooches a plenty for the happy couple as they sealed their union
‘The last ever episode of Miranda starts in 7 minutes I’m already crying’, with another adding: ‘I don’t think anyone has any idea how sad I am that this is the last ever episode of Miranda’.
And they were not the only ones feeling sad to see the end of the show.
In the days running up to the broadcast, Hart herself also posted messages to her 1.7million Twitter followers. She wrote on New Year’s Eve: ‘Feels odd that a New Year starts with my last ever sitcom outing. 8pm tomorrow night, we bow out.’
She added yesterday: ‘Happy New Year’s Day and goodbye to my creative baby day. 8pm BBC One. Can’t promise but you MIGHT get a glimpse of that @GaryBarlow’. The Take That frontman made a cameo at the end, performing at Miranda’s wedding.
Back For Good: Gary Barlow made a cameo appearance and sung for the pair
Catch her: Miranda's mother appeared to be in shock that her daughter had finally got hitched
Hart has said she may now take an extended break from performing in order to recuperate from the stresses of writing comedy.
She said: ‘I have always gone travelling in-between and taken some time away so you get perspective and keep the joy of it. Because writing comedy is so hard, stressful, you need to have a break to unwind and think of new jokes. So I have always stepped away to come back so maybe [it will be] for a bit longer this time.’
