Is this Lupita's first fashion fail? Miss Nyong'o makes a rare style misstep as she leads the SAG Awards' worst-dressed

Usually Lupita Nyong'o can do no wrong when it comes to the red carpet. But at the SAG Awards this evening, her Elie Saab gown earned her a place on our worst-dressed list for the first time.
The stunning 12 Years a Slave star was drowned by the gown's long sleeves and full skirt, while the print - black stripes over a digital floral motif - was overwhelming. The result was that the dress wore her, rather than the other way around.
And Lupita was not the only one. While most of the stars in attendance played it safe, not all of the fashion risks paid off. Case in point: Rashida Jones.
A rare fashion fail: Lupita Nyong'o's bold Elie Saab gown drowned her with its long sleeves and full skirt, while the print - black stripes over a digital floral motif - was overwhelming
A risk too far: Rashida Jones in Emanuel Ungaro (left) and Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael in Thakoon (right)
The actress made a bold choice with her Emanuel Ungaro black-and-white sequin gown with blue trim. But that print and color combination would be better suited to a sundress. Even in sequins, it seemed at odds with the formality of the event.
In fact, the color white is often a challenge on the red carpet. Done right, it can look fresh and romantic, but done wrong, it can look more like a bad wedding dress.
Unfortunately for poor Laura Carmichael, that was the resulting effect of her Thakoon gown, which featured a crossover bodice and a sheer zebra motif skirt.
The Downton Abbey actress's hair let down her look too - while the intention was likely beachy waves, a black tie affair like this calls for a more polished look. And perhaps a trip to the colorist to address one's roots.
Pepto abysmal: The hue of Charissa Thompson's ultra figure-hugging gown reminds us of a popular over-the-counter stomach medicine
When bad dresses happen to good people: Lorelei Linklater's Honor dress would have been lovely without the waitressy white lace
White was the downfall of Boyhood star Lorelei Linklater's dress too. The actress, 20, who had a role in her father Richard Linklater's critically-acclaimed movie, wore a black Honor dress with too-long bell sleeves.
But that was not even the worst of it. The dress was trimmed with white lace at the sleeves and back, giving it the look of a waitress costume that not even Lorelei's winning smile could redeem.
It is never a good thing when a red carpet gown reminds one of a stomach upset, but that was the effect of Charissa Thompson's bold pink dress that can only be likened to Pepto Bismol. The TV host may have a rocking body, but that turtle-like neckline and round keyhole back does her no favors.
The Michael Costello dress worn by Orange is the New Black's Dascha Polanco shared the exact same neckline and back details as Charissa's gown. And while the figure-hugging silhouette made the most of her hourglass curves, the white lace fabric robbed her of some of the intended sophistication.
