He shot to fame with a refreshingly enthusiastic outlook on food in his first series The Naked Chef.
And it was a case of life imitating art when Jamie Oliver first tried to woo his now-wife Jools.
The
39-year-old has recalled how he stripped off while cooking sea bass in a
bid to impress his partner in the early days of their romance - only to
be left yelping in pain when a burst of steam from the oven hit him in a
very sensitive area.

Cooking disaster: Jamie Oliver recalls a disastrous date with Jools on The Graham Norton Show
Speaking
on The Graham Norton Show, which airs on BBC1 on Friday, he explains:
'I am a romantic, so I had cleaned the house, I had Sade on and I was
cooking sea bass.
'I should add I was also completely naked apart from a bow on my manhood
'I
opened the oven and a jet of steam burnt my penis. It was really,
really, really painful and I screamed which wasn’t very romantic.
'I had to pack myself with frozen peas. I was so swollen but it was so painful. It was a bitter sweet experience!
Ouch! The cook, dubbed the Naked Chef
in his early career, was left with a very intimate burn after cooking in
the buff while trying to woo his now wife
Worked out well: Despite his embarrassing incident, the pair wed in 2000 and went on to have four children
The
cook, who married Jools in 2000 and went on to have four children with
her, also reveals that he almost suffered several other painful
experiences at the beginning of his career.
He adds: 'When I started Naked Chef cooking was for girls but when it finished it was ‘cooking got you girls.’
'For the first couple of years men hated me, I got so much abuse. I literally got chased down a road once.
Bubbling over: The cook shared his eye-watering tale with fellow guests Victoria Wood and Michael Keaton
Close call: Jamie also revealed that
his cocky style of cooking got him in trouble with male viewers in the
early days of his career - with one man even coming close to punching
him
'This
massive lump of a guy got hold of me, pinned me up against a wall and I
thought he was going to hit me and then his face softened and he said,
"If I’d met you a month ago I would have punched in the head but
actually I’m pretty good at cooking now so thank you very much."
'As I walked away he said, "And by the way, I’m better than you!"'
Jamie
got the last laugh, however; since his run on TV began in 1999, he has
released over 15 best-selling cookbooks and built up a restaurant and
merchandise empire worth a staggering £150m.
Alongside the chef, Victoria Wood, Michael Keaton, Sir Ian McKellen and One Direction all appear on the Graham Norton show.
