These days he is best known for his work in The Fall alongside Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson but Emmett Scanlan first made his name in Hollyoaks where he met Claire Cooper.
And three years after the former co-stars began dating, Emmett, 35, popped the question in a romantic Christmas Eve proposal and couldn't wait to announce the happy news on Instagram.
Revealing his engagement, Emmett posted a sweet picture of the couple kissing while holding celebratory glasses of red wine, with Claire's dazzling engagement ring visible on her left hand.

He captioned the picture: 'There are over a million ways to ask the question, but only one real answer... #WorldsLongestHangoverStartsToday.'
Emmett played villain Brendan Brady in Hollyoaks from 2010 to 2013 while Claire, 34, starred as Jacqui McQueen from 2006 to 2013.
Following months of speculation about their relationship, Emmett and Claire first went public with a romantic holiday in May 2011.
Cooper previously dated former Hollyoaks co-star Kevin Sacre in 2007, before he met his now-wife, ex-Strictly Come Dancing professional Camilla Dallerup.
Meanwhile, Scanlan has a daughter Kayla from a previous relationship.
Aside from her Hollyoaks role, Cooper also co-owns clothing rental boutique The Closet with co-stars Jennifer Metcalfe and Leah Hackett.
Emmett left Hollyoaks in 2013 and revealed he felt it was time to move on.
He said: 'I loved my time [on Hollyoaks]. I loved the people. I loved the character. The experience. But I don't want to be stuck in a moment. It's like an ex-girlfriend. At some point you got to delete their number and start seeing someone else.'

And his risk paid off as it wasn't long before he landed the role of Detective Constable Glen Martin in The Fall, which has taken audiences in Europe and the US by storm.
Speaking about his hunky co-star Dornan, Emmett previously told the Sunday World: 'Jamie is on a different and exciting journey to me and I think he's great.
'He's riding the wave to stardom and it's richly deserved. He takes risks. And that has to be admired.
'His profile when Fifty Shades comes out will be insane and that will lead to more viewers for The Fall. I'm sure and it will help bring in a new audience, I have no doubt.'
