South African king sentenced to 12yrs in prison for cruelty towards his subjects
South African king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has been sentenced to 12-years in prison for arson, kidnap and
assault of his subjects. King Dalindyebo handed himself over to the Mthatha Correctional
Center in Eastern Cape province minutes before midnight on Wednesday, December 30, after failing in an 11th-hour
bid to evade incarceration by seeking a retrial or a presidential pardon.
In a statement, Justice spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said:
"We confirm that King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo handed himself to the head of Mthatha Corresctional Centre at 23h40 in the presence of the Regional Commissionerof the Eastern Cape"
In 2009, the controversial king was convicted of manslaughter,
arson
and assault charges for offenses committed more than two decades ago. He
was sentenced to 15 years in 2009, but in October the Supreme
Court dropped the manslaughter charge and reduced his sentence to 12
years on appeal.
This week he sought to further extend his bail, but a High Court
judge in Mthatha threw out the request. The king's daughter, Yasmin
Omar, stated that the judge had not given them reasons for his decision.
"No
indication was given for when we can expect the reasons for the
dismissal of the application and we will continue with the case," said
Omar.
He is expected to serve his sentence in Wellington Prison, outside Mthatha.
The 51-year-old king, a self-confessed marijuana smoker, was found
guilty of torching dwellings that housed some of his subjects and
tenants who had resisted eviction.
He was also convicted of publicly assaulting three young men who had
already been brutally beaten by his henchmen, and of kidnapping a wife
and children of one of his subjects whom he considered a dissident.
The Supreme Court concluded that the king "ruled with fear and
trepidation" and that "his behavior was all the more deplorable because
the victims of his reign of terror were the vulnerable rural poor." It
also accused him of "obstructive" action for changing his lawyers 11
times, causing 34 postponements of the case.
Dalindyebo became king of the Thembu, a Xhosa ethnic group
that boasted Mandela as its most prominent clan member, in 1989. The
royal family will meet next week to discuss whether a successor should
be chosen due to their monarch's imprisonment.

Two Burmese men sentenced to death for the Thailand backpacker murders

The bodies of Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were found in September 2014 on a Koh Tao beach in the Gulf of Thailand that is popular with divers.
Police said Witheridge, 23, was found bludgeoned to death and had been raped. Miller, 24, also suffered blows to his head before being drowned in the sea.
At a court in Koh Samui on Thursday, three judges found Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun guilty of murder and rape and ordered that they face the death penalty.
The family of David Miller - who had said they wanted to see "justice done fairly and openly" - attended the hearing but relatives of Hannah Witheridge did not travel to Thailand for the verdicts.
David's brother Michael, flanked by parents Ian and Sue, said outside court: "We believe the result today represents justice for David and Hannah.
"David always stood up for justice and justice is what has been delivered today. We respect this court and it's decision completely. "It is our opinion that the evidence against Wai Phyo and Zaw Lin is absolutely overwhelming.
"They raped to satisfy their selfish desires and murdered to cover up that fact. They have shown no remorse during the trial. We believe the correct verdict has been reached."The mothers of the two defendants burst into tears after the verdicts and emerged from court as Michael finished the family's statement.
The verdict follows an investigation and trial that was mired in controversy, including allegations of police incompetence, mishandling of evidence and torture of the suspects.
Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun, migrant workers from neighbouring Burma who were working on the island, were arrested after weeks of pressure on authorities to solve the crime.
Both defendants, aged 22, initially confessed to the killings but later retracted these statements, saying they had been tortured. Police denied using force during their interrogation.
Prosecutors said the DNA evidence, collected from cigarette butts, a condom and the bodies of the victims, links the two men to the killings.
Migrant workers often face discrimination in Thailand and have been used as scapegoats for crimes in the past.
Allegations by defence lawyers of police incompetence and evidence of mishandling have dominated the trial, which began in July and ended in October after 21 days of witness hearings.
Thai police were widely accused of bungling the investigation, including failing to close off the island quickly and allowing potential suspects to escape.
A debate over DNA samples that police say link the two suspects to Witheridge's body has been at the heart of the trial.
Defence lawyers had asked to retest crucial DNA samples taken from the victims' bodies but authorities issued conflicting statements on DNA evidence and, at one point, said that it had been used up.
No independent re-testing of DNA evidence had been done in the case.

AKA's baby mama DJ Zinhle confirms AKA & Bonang Matheba's affair

"A week before our daughter was born, I found out about an affair between Kiernan (the father of my child) and Bonang Matheba. I also received confirmation of all rumours through an honest conversation which I had with Kiernan, who confirmed that the affair had been going on for over 5 months. I will always respect him for his honesty.
AKA and Bonang on a date
"I have dealt with this and found peace with his choice. After the release of our first statement regarding the separation I felt that there was no need to go into details about the reasons, however, after the continued public display of Kiernan and Bonang’s relationship as well as the commentary surrounding it, it has become important for me to affirm my power as a women, my strength of character, my continued focus on my work and my commitment to being a positive role model
As I transition into a new phase of my life, navigating motherhood, work, family, friends. I want to look back at this moment and be proud of the choices I made as a role model not only for any women going through a hard time but for my little Kairo who I hope will pull strength and find courage to choose herself and trust in her own power."
Photos: 36-year-old woman jailed for life for attacking her husband with acid

The 36-year-old claimed she committed the offense in self-defense, after the husband attempted to splash the acid on her. However, Principal Magistrate Robinson Oigara dismissed the claim stating that she would have sustained some injuries if that was the case.
On the day of the incident, the defendant is said to have prepared the children for school, completed her house chores then later walked into their bedroom where Patrick was lying in bed, and splashed acid on him. She then locked the door and escaped only for the neighbours to hear screams from the house, before coming to Njue's rescue.
Evidence presented in court proved that on hearing the husband was still alive, she rushed to the hospital Njue was admitted, in an attempt to finish her mission. Vernicia Ruguru was sentenced to life in prison but was granted 14 days to appeal the judgement.
Soundcity TV replies Peter Okoye
For 10 Years, @SoundcityTV has been a huge supporter of #PSquare and the #PSquare brand, right from their 1st music video to the last video released in 2014. Most of their videos got massive airplay on @SoundcityTV than any other music channel.@SoundcityTV viewers sometimes complain about the dominance of #PSquare videos on the channel & charts. We were a huge supporter and gave everything to their works.
We have assisted the #PSquare brand, toured with them over Africa at our expense. Gave them ad-spots for their events / projects. Gave them prime time slots for their videos and included them in our array of Programmes / programming.
We invited #PSquare to one of our annual events last December 2014 and they insisted we pay a certain amount of money. We reasonably asked, what is the least we can offer?; this was us foregoing the fact that we had invested a lot in #PSquare’s career as music talents / artistes & entertainers.
The feedback was, “WHAT HAS SOUNDCITY EVER DONE FOR PSQUARE? TELL ME ONE THING SOUNDCITY HAS EVER DONE FOR PSQUARE” (Jude Okoye, Manager).
While we understand that this is business, there is also room for special consideration. Saying our TV brand has never done anything for #PSquare was quite damning. Clearly, there was no need to argue with their decision and reasoning. We decided to stop ‘doing anything’ with/for #PSquare, since our 10years of supporting the group meant nothing to them. We assumed our relationship was a mutually beneficial one, but clearly one-sided.
Ultimately, #PSquare music videos stopped airing on @SoundcityTV since January 01, 2015. Soundcity reserves the right to air music videos on our cable / satellite or terrestrial platforms.
Overall, we wish the duo the best in their endeavours. @SoundcityTV will keep airing works of the best and upcoming Nigerian artistes, and also, the best #African artistes to the world, especially nurturing their talents from inception till they become huge megastars and international superstars.
Thank you.

US pastor committed suicide after his name was exposed in Ashley Madison adultery website
John Gibson, a US pastor committed suicide six days after his name was exposed by
hackers of the Ashley Madison adultery website, his wife, Christi Gibson told CNN.
Canadian police have said that at least two suicides were linked to the
leak of 32 million customer profiles from the Canada-based site last
month. Christi Gibson discovered her husband’s body and a suicide note which
chronicled his demons & his shame at being exposed - in their New
Orleans home on August 24.
"He talked about depression. He talked about having his name on there,
and he said he was just very, very sorry,” Gibson said as their adult
son and daughter sat next to her in a New Orleans studio.
"Nothing is worth the loss of a father and a husband and a friend. It just didn’t merit it. It didn’t merit it at all."
In addition to his work as a pastor, Gibson, 56, taught at New Orleans
Baptist Theological Seminary. Gibson said her husband, who had struggled
with depression and addiction in the past, was worried that he would
lose his job.
"It wasn’t so bad that we wouldn’t have forgiven it, and so many people
have said that to us, but for John, it carried such a shame," she told
CNN.
"What we know about him is that he poured his life into other people,
and he offered grace and mercy and forgiveness to everyone else, but
somehow he couldn’t extend that to himself."
Ashley Madison, launched in 2001, is known for its slogan: “Life is
short. Have an affair.” It helps connect people seeking to have
extramarital relationships and is owned by Avid Life Media.
According to
authorities, the company became aware of the hack on July
12 when staff were greeted in the morning with a message on their
computers threatening to leak client information unless the Ashley
Madison website was “shut down immediately, permanently.” The message
was accompanied by rockers AC/DC’s song “Thunderstruck.”
Ashley Madison ran into more trouble when tech news site Gizmodo looked
at the leaked data and concluded that it showed little if any activity
from the site’s purported female members, suggesting many accounts were
in fact fake.
Avid Life Media rejected the analysis and said the site has registered
hundreds of thousands of new members including real women, in the
wake of the hack, which has garnered massive media attention.
Tributes to Gibson poured in from students and faculty who remembered
him as a kind, generous man who would repair student’s vehicles in his
spare time. He was pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Pearlington,
Mississippi. He obtained a doctorate of theology from the seminary and was elected to the faculty in 1998, the obituary said.
