The news that Rooney was going to take part in training on Friday, would have come as a boost to United after he suffered a knee injury during their 3-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The England international was replaced by Robin van Persie in the closing stages of the Premier League clash and was seen receiving treatment on the bench.
And United manager Louis van Gaal confirmed to MUTV after the game that Rooney had sustained the injury but that it was too early to know the severity.
